Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not only the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
