A trader made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of American actions.

Market Movement in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the month's conclusion increased in the hours before Donald Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.

A single trader, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a initial bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

But the odds had increased to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Emerges

Elected officials are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation introduced on Monday seeks to ban public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to politics.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting industry.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
