A minimum of 13 people killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
