2K Hires Apex Legends Producer to Boost Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Shift Follows Poor Reception

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the need for a more defined direction.

Ismailer noted that the team is now overhauling the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to better meet community desires.

A Pattern of Key Acquisitions

The news echoes a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.

Here is the entire message from the president's memo:

Team—

I know you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative designers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to endure.”

Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s the game demo was revealing. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the necessity for a sharper vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the criticism to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed direction - one that’s ready to achieve its potential to our players.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce the new hire as the latest Director of the team. Following a period of discussions, he starts with us on next week.

Ben’s leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter space is vast, having devoted the recent years producing and leading some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.

Please join me in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to keep witnessing the evolution of the game in the time to come.

David

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch reads. "Face the competition with new abilities, challenges, and tests that change every round. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Or go big, gamble everything, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The decision is in your hands."

Project Ethos does not have an announced debut schedule or supported systems, but players can anticipate more updates as creation progresses.
